Social Work Honor Society

The National Council is the policy-making body and meets each year at the time and place of the Annual program meeting of CSWE. Each chapter has one voting representative on the Council. Through engagement in the activities of the organization, students at the university benefit from diverse social connections, participation in teamwork, and the opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of the community. Along the way, the student strengthens the value of service, develops confidence as a leader, and enhances professional skills. We invite you to join us even if you are not an accepted member of the program yet. Our officers serve as mentors for students who intend to apply for the program, as well as for students recently accepted to major status.

For example, in March of they hosted a prom night-style dance at the Graham University Center ballroom for adults with physical and developmental disabilities. They also collaborated with the Counseling and Psychological Services office to raise awareness about mental health issues and, separately, organized an ongoing sock drive for the homeless. When the pandemic struck, they began hosting virtual competency-building webinars for members on topics such as cultural competency. UAB also encourages applications from individuals with disabilities and veterans. There are many ways to get involved with others pursuing degrees in social work at NAU. You’ll meet new people, get involved, network with peers and mentors, and round out the learning that takes place in the classroom.

Membership dues for Phi Alpha Honor Society are $60, to be submitted by check with the membership application. The fee includes life membership, certificate and medallion. If the fee prohibits you from applying for membership, contact the faculty sponsor to discuss your situation. They rallied for bills in support of children, social welfare, aging persons and their caregivers, as well as those affected by mental health and behavioral issues. The charter chapters were Florida State University, Michigan State University, Ohio Northern University, Central State College, University of Dayton, and the University of Tennessee.

This is an important skill to develop while a student at UNCW, as interdisciplinary teamwork is the modality utilized when providing care for individuals in the field of health and human services. This award recognizes outstanding service conducted by chapters.

Each chapter is free to develop a program to meet local needs. The National Council of Phi Alpha, the organization’s policy making body, meets once a year at the Council of Social Work Education’s (CSWE’s) annual program meeting conference. Each chapter has one voting representative on The National Council.

You will get insight into upcoming classes, practicum information, and learn about other aspects of the Social Work program. SSWO publishes a newsletter to inform social work students about upcoming events. Our group of faculty and student leaders recognize the need to welcome and honor people of all races, genders, creeds, cultures, and sexual orientations, while valuing intellectual curiosity and integrity. We also provide leadership and direction to the School of Social Work as the school implements diversity initiatives in accordance with its diversity plan. Honorary membership may be granted to professional social workers and others whose support of social work education and practice merit such recognition.

The officers of the organization shall consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer to be elected by a majority vote of the active chapter membership. Completed 9 semester hours or 12 quarter hours of required social work courses. UAB students who wish to join the SSWO must fill out and submit a membership application .

The Association of College Honor Societies founded in 1925, is the nation’s only certifying agency for college and university honor societies.
