The Society Of Classical Poets Literary Magazine

With this in mind, the Society of Classical Poets is a 501 non-profit organization formed in 2012 as a group of poets dedicated to the revival and proliferation of good, new poetry. NewPages.com is news, information, and guides to literary magazines, independent publishers, creative writing programs, alternative periodicals, indie bookstores, writing contests, and more. Many more can be found by anyone valiant, longsuffering and patient enough to wade through Muck’s opus. Since I questioned the Keystone Scops in public, I have been called a “hillbilly,” a “failed editor” who publishes “greeting card verse,” etc.

The Society was established in 2012 by Evan Mantyk, an English teacher, and Joshua Philipp, a journalist. It runs several poetry contests, including a “Friends of Falun Gong Poetry Contest”, yearly since 2016. It was a fun time and I look forward to hearing what Larry thinks of my little book, since many of us know how much weight a recommendation from him can carry. The varied strains of the pieces all come together under a profound frame story of the Creator coming to earth to impart classical arts and culture that today are under attack. It’s an exciting story both inside the art and outside it as Shen Yun is in fact banned in China and there are detailed accounts of harassment and anti-Shen Yun campaigns carried out by Chinese consulates and overseas Chinese media around the world.

The Society of Classical Poets website receives millions of views every year. Visitors read engaging, beautiful, topical verse that enlivens Western Civilization’s great conversation. That conversation continues in our annual printed Journal drawn from the best poetry published on our website. The Society is a 501 nonprofit organization, based in Mount Hope, New York, dedicated to the continuation of Beauty, Goodness, Truth, and excellent poetry. I have taken my family, including two small children, to see Shen Yun for the last few years. (You can read my poetry about it “I Love the Dance” and “Upon Seeing Shen Yun.”) But there is more to this story than just another individual review or a wonderful family experience.

In 2020, the Society’s online symposium featured A.M. Juster, a major formalist poet as well as the former Social Security Administration Commissioner under the Obama and Bush administrations. The Society of Classical Poets is reviving poetry with rhyme, meter, and good character. Since the Society was founded in 2012, we have grown from a blog with weekly posts to a major non-profit organization publishing the highest quality poetry, as well as insightful essays, educational resources, and the most exquisite art. You could publish it anywhere else or sell it to any publication as desired. The first step in publishing is to have it published on the Society’s homepage and we will check with you first to confirm if we have your permission to do so. Alternatively, when submitting you may add a note stating “do not publish if not a winner.” If your poem places in the competition it may be published by the Society during or before the month of February (you do not have the choice of non-publication without losing your place).

Evan Mantyk is the president and co-founder of the Society of Classical Poets. He teaches courses in literature and history at Fei Tian Academy of the Arts, in upstate New York. He previously worked as a news editor and reporter in New York City. And look what a difficult, thankless task the White Man had set for himself!

Falun Dafa is one of China’s many privately passed on qigong or cultivation practices. It became hugely popular until it was banned in 1999 by the Chinese Communist Party, which saw the spirituality of Falun Dafa as a threat to its officially atheist government. The human rights abuses, detailed by Freedom House, Amnesty International, and countless eyewitness accounts, are truly atrocious and a matter of urgency. There is something universal in China’s 5,000-year-old culture, as can be seen in the commonness of Chinatowns, Chinese takeout, and martial arts in almost every corner of the developed world. Now, Shen Yun seems to be revealing a new layer of culture that people are quickly identifying as self-evidently beautiful and sublime.
